What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Dravik teamUpdated 6 min read

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so that answer engines, such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and voice assistants, can pull a clear, accurate answer from your page and cite you. It builds on SEO, with extra focus on direct answers, question-based structure and being a trusted source.

Where the term comes from

"Answer engine" describes any system that responds to a question with an answer instead of a list of links. The idea is older than today's AI chatbots. Featured snippets in Google and voice assistants like Alexa and Siri were early answer engines, and AEO started as the work of winning those spots.

Today the term mostly refers to AI-generated answers. When a buyer asks "what is three-way matching in accounts payable" or "how do I automate lead follow-up", they increasingly get a written answer with a few cited sources. AEO is the work of being one of those sources.

How answer engines choose what to show

The platforms publish some information about this, and much of the rest comes from observation. Here is what is reasonably clear.

What is documented:

  • Google says pages must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that there are no extra technical requirements beyond normal SEO.
  • OpenAI documents a crawler called OAI-SearchBot that it uses to surface websites in ChatGPT search results, and says sites that block it may not appear in those answers.
  • Perplexity documents its PerplexityBot crawler and shows numbered source citations in its answers.

What is observed or likely:

  • Answer engines tend to quote passages that answer a question directly and can stand on their own.
  • Pages that already rank well in traditional search are frequently among the cited sources, since many answer engines retrieve web results before writing an answer.
  • Clear structure (descriptive headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables) seems to make content easier to extract.
  • Sources that are widely referenced elsewhere on the web tend to appear more often.

Treat anything in the second list as a working hypothesis. The systems change often.

AEO vs SEO

SEO AEO
Goal Rank pages in search results and earn clicks Be the source an answer engine quotes or cites
Unit of success A page ranking for a query A passage or fact used in an answer
Main output Blue links Generated answers, snippets, voice responses
Measurement Rankings, clicks, conversions Citations, brand mentions, referral traffic from AI tools
Content style Comprehensive pages Comprehensive pages with direct, quotable answers
Foundation Crawlability, relevance, authority The same, plus structure that makes answers easy to extract

AEO does not replace SEO. Most of the foundations, such as being crawlable, indexed, relevant and trusted, are the same. AEO adds a layer on top. Our post on SEO vs AEO vs GEO compares all three terms side by side.

The core AEO practices

1. Answer the question in the first 40 to 60 words

Open each page or section with a direct answer to the question in its heading. Then expand with detail. This mirrors how featured snippets have long worked and gives AI systems a clean passage to quote.

Example (hypothetical):

  • Weak opening: "Many businesses today are thinking about how their accounts payable processes could be more efficient."
  • Strong opening: "Three-way matching is an accounts payable control that compares the purchase order, the receiving record and the supplier invoice before payment is approved. If all three agree, the invoice is paid. If not, it is held for review."

2. Use question-shaped headings

Write headings that match how buyers phrase questions: "How long does invoice automation take to set up?" rather than "Implementation timeline". Pull real questions from Search Console queries, sales calls and forums.

3. Make each section self-contained

An answer engine may lift one section without the rest of the page. Each section should make sense on its own. Avoid "as mentioned above" and define terms where you use them.

4. Use lists and tables for structured information

Steps, comparisons, criteria and specifications are easier to extract when they are in numbered lists and tables instead of long paragraphs.

5. Be specific and accurate

Vague content gives an answer engine nothing worth citing. Concrete steps, definitions, thresholds and named sources are more useful. If you cite a number, name where it comes from.

6. Show who is behind the content

Clear authorship, company information, and evidence of real experience help both readers and search systems judge trust. Google's guidance on helpful content talks about experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness.

7. Let the crawlers in

Check your robots.txt and any firewall or bot-protection settings. If you block search and AI crawlers such as Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot, those systems may not be able to use your pages. Our guide to AI crawlers and robots.txt explains which bots do what.

8. Add accurate structured data

Schema markup helps search engines understand your organization, articles and services. It is not a guaranteed path into AI answers, but it supports clear understanding.

An AEO page template

  1. H1 with the question or topic
  2. A 40 to 60 word direct answer
  3. A short section on why it matters
  4. Step-by-step or criteria section with a numbered list
  5. A comparison table where relevant
  6. Common mistakes
  7. A 4 to 6 question FAQ using real buyer questions
  8. A clear next step for readers who want help

How to measure AEO

Measurement is still immature. Practical options:

  • Run your key questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot each month and record whether you are mentioned or cited
  • Track referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics (sources such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai)
  • Watch Search Console for impressions on question-style queries
  • Ask new leads how they found you, and include AI assistants as an option

Results vary between runs and between users, so look at trends over several checks rather than any single answer. Our post on measuring AI search traffic goes deeper.

Who should invest in AEO

AEO is worth the effort if your buyers ask research questions before choosing a provider, which covers most B2B services. It is especially useful when your category is complex enough that buyers need explanations, comparisons and definitions. The good news is that AEO work usually improves your traditional SEO and your conversion rate at the same time, because clear answers help human readers too.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No, but they overlap heavily. SEO aims to rank pages and earn clicks, while AEO aims to have your content quoted or cited in answers. Most AEO work builds on solid SEO foundations.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

The terms overlap and are often used interchangeably. AEO usually emphasizes direct answers and question-based content, while GEO (generative engine optimization) focuses on visibility in AI-generated responses more broadly, including brand mentions. Both aim at the same outcome.

Does AEO reduce website traffic?

Some questions are now answered without a click, so certain informational pages may see fewer visits. Being cited still builds visibility and trust, and buyers with deeper needs often click through. The alternative, being absent from the answer, is usually worse.

How long does AEO take to show results?

AI answers that rely on live search can reflect changes once your pages are recrawled and indexed, which can take days to weeks. Building enough authority to be cited consistently usually takes months, similar to SEO.

Do I need special tools for AEO?

No. You can start with Search Console, your analytics and manual checks in the main AI tools. Paid AI visibility trackers can help with scale, but the core work is clear, well-structured, trustworthy content.
