AI visibility tools, what they measure and how to choose one
Dravik teamUpdated 6 min read
AI visibility tools track how often your brand is mentioned or cited when people ask AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews questions about your market. Most work the same way: you give them a list of prompts, they run those prompts on a schedule across several AI engines, and they report which brands were named, how they were described and which web pages were cited. They are useful for spotting trends and gaps. They cannot show you what any individual buyer saw, because AI answers change between runs, users and locations.
The category has grown quickly, and established SEO platforms have added AI visibility features alongside new specialist tools. This guide explains what to look for so you can judge any of them.
What do AI visibility tools measure?
Most tools report some combination of these:
| Metric | What it tells you | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Mention rate | Share of tracked prompts where your brand appears | Depends entirely on which prompts you track |
| Share of voice | Your mentions compared with competitors' | Same prompt-selection limit |
| Citations | Which URLs the AI linked or referenced | Only meaningful for engines that show sources |
| Position | Where in the answer you appear | Order in a written answer is less stable than a ranking |
| Sentiment or description | How the answer describes you | Automated sentiment can miss nuance |
| Source domains | Which third-party sites the engines lean on for your topic | Very useful for planning off-site work |
| AI Overview presence | Whether Google shows an AI Overview for a keyword and who it cites | Varies by location, device and time |
The most actionable output is usually the source list. If the same review site, directory or publication keeps appearing in answers for your category, that is where your brand needs to be described accurately. Our post on the sources AI engines trust explains why.
What kinds of AI visibility tools are there?
Features inside SEO platforms
Several large SEO suites now include AI visibility reports. Semrush offers an AI Visibility Toolkit, Ahrefs has Brand Radar, and SE Ranking has an AI search toolkit. The advantage is that the data sits next to your keyword and ranking data. Coverage of specific AI engines, prompt limits and pricing differ, so check the current details on each vendor's site.
Specialist AI visibility trackers
A newer group of tools focuses only on AI answers. Examples include Profound, LLMrefs, Peec AI and Otterly.AI. They tend to offer more engines, more prompt control and more detail on citations, and some are built for agencies tracking many brands.
AI Overview trackers
Some rank trackers now record whether an AI Overview appeared for each tracked keyword and which pages it cited. This is useful if Google is your main channel and you want to know which of your keywords are now answered on the results page.
Analytics you already have
Google Analytics 4 and similar tools can show visits referred from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com. That measures traffic, not visibility, but it is free and tells you whether AI answers are sending you people. Our guide to measuring AI search traffic shows how to set it up. Google Search Console counts AI Overview appearances within its normal performance data rather than in a separate report, so it does not isolate them.
How do you choose an AI visibility tool?
Ask these questions of any tool you consider:
- Which AI engines does it cover? At minimum you probably want ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity. Gemini, Copilot, Claude and Meta AI matter in some markets.
- Does it use live web search or only the base model? Answers from a model with web search enabled behave differently from answers drawn only from training data. Ask which mode the tool runs.
- How often does it run each prompt? Because answers vary, a single run can mislead. Tools that run prompts repeatedly or frequently give more stable trends.
- Which country and language does it simulate? For US buyers you want US results.
- Can you write your own prompts? Prompts generated from keywords are a start, but real buyer questions are more specific.
- Does it record citations and source domains? This is what turns a report into an action plan.
- Can you export the raw answers? You will want to read them, not only see a score.
- What does it cost per prompt or per brand tracked? Pricing often scales with the number of prompts and engines.
Can you track AI visibility without a tool?
Yes, and for a small business it is often the right place to start.
- Write down 20 to 30 questions your buyers ask before they contact a provider like you. Mix definitions ("what is order entry automation"), comparisons ("RPA vs AI agents") and recommendations ("best accounting firm for construction companies in Denver").
- Once a month, run each question in ChatGPT with search enabled, Perplexity, Gemini and Google (noting any AI Overview).
- Use a logged-out or fresh session where you can, and record the date, tool, whether you were mentioned, how you were described, competitors named and sources cited.
- Keep it in a spreadsheet so you can see the trend.
This takes an hour or two a month. When the list grows or you need more engines and frequency, a tool earns its cost. Our guide on how to audit your AI search visibility covers the manual method in more detail.
What can these tools not tell you?
- What a specific buyer saw. Answers are personalized by conversation history, location and settings.
- Why a model chose one brand over another. Tools show the outcome, not the reasoning.
- How much revenue AI visibility produced. You need analytics, form fields and sales conversations for that.
- Whether a mention was accurate, unless someone reads it. Automated sentiment scoring can mark a wrong description as positive.
Treat the numbers as directional. A rising mention rate across many prompts over several months means something. A single drop on one prompt usually does not.
How do you act on what the tools show?
The data is only useful if it changes what you do. Common actions:
- If you are missing from answers and your pages are not cited, check crawler access and indexing first (see AI crawlers and robots.txt), then improve the pages that should answer those questions using answer-first writing.
- If competitors appear and the cited sources are review sites or directories, get your listings complete and accurate on those sites.
- If you appear but are described wrongly, find the source of the wrong description and correct it there.
- If AI Overviews now answer many of your informational keywords, prioritize pages that earn the citation, and track clicks from those pages separately.
Do you need a tool, an agency or both?
A tool tells you where you stand. It does not fix anything. Many businesses start with manual tracking, add a tool when the prompt list grows, and bring in help when they need content, off-site work or technical fixes. Our guide on how to choose an AI SEO agency covers that decision.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the best AI visibility tool?
There is no single best one. The right choice depends on which AI engines matter for your buyers, how many prompts you need to track, whether you need citation data and your budget. Start by tracking a small prompt set by hand to learn what you need.
- Are AI visibility tools accurate?
They accurately record what the AI said when the tool ran the prompt. Because answers vary between runs and users, any single result is a sample. Trends across many prompts and many runs are more reliable than any one answer.
- Is an AEO tool the same as an AI visibility tool?
Usually, yes. Vendors use AEO tool, GEO tool, AI visibility tool and LLM visibility tool for similar products. Some AEO tools also suggest content changes, while others only track.
- Can Google Search Console show AI Overview traffic?
Not separately. Search Console includes AI Overview appearances within its overall performance data, so you cannot isolate them there. Third-party AI Overview trackers fill that gap.
- How many prompts should I track?
Enough to cover your main services and the main ways buyers ask about them. For many small and mid-sized businesses, 20 to 50 well-chosen prompts is a practical start.
