SEO for personal injury law firms, a practical guide

Dravik teamUpdated 8 min read

SEO for personal injury law firms is the work of getting your firm in front of injured people at the moment they search for a lawyer, on Google's map results, in the organic results and in AI answers. It rests on four things: a strong Google Business Profile for each office, a dedicated page for every case type and city you serve, a steady flow of genuine client reviews, and links and mentions from local and legal sources. Everything else supports those four.

Personal injury is one of the most competitive local search categories in the US. Smaller firms still win when they do the basics completely and keep doing them.

How do injured people search for a lawyer?

Most PI searches fall into three groups, and each needs a different page.

  1. Urgent local searches. "Car accident lawyer near me", "truck accident attorney Houston", "slip and fall lawyer". These trigger the map pack, and the firm's Google Business Profile does most of the work.
  2. Question searches. "How long do I have to file a personal injury claim in Florida", "what is my car accident case worth", "do I need a lawyer for a minor accident". These are informational, often answered by an AI Overview, and they are where a firm can build trust before the first call.
  3. Comparison and vetting searches. "Best personal injury lawyer in Atlanta", "[firm name] reviews". People check reviews, read the attorney bios and look at results pages before they call.

A single generic "Practice Areas" page serves none of them well.

What pages should a personal injury firm have?

One page per case type

Write a separate page for each type of case you actually take: car accidents, truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, pedestrian accidents, slip and fall, dog bites, wrongful death, medical malpractice if you handle it, and so on. Each page should explain:

  • What typically happens after this kind of injury and what the client should do first
  • What damages may be available, in plain terms
  • The deadline that applies in your state (the statute of limitations), stated carefully and with a link to the statute or a state resource
  • How your firm handles these cases, from first call to resolution
  • How fees work, if you take cases on contingency
  • A short FAQ that answers the questions you hear on intake calls

One page per office location, and city pages only where you really serve

If you have offices in three cities, each office needs its own page with the address, phone number, hours, a map, the attorneys who work there and directions. Those pages back up each Google Business Profile.

City pages for places without an office are where many PI sites go wrong. Dozens of near-identical "car accident lawyer in [town]" pages with the town name swapped in are thin content, and Google's spam policies call out doorway pages built this way. Build a city page only when you can say something specific: local courts, local roads with known crash patterns, cases you have handled there (described in general terms that respect client confidentiality), and how clients from that area meet with you.

Our guide to programmatic SEO without thin pages covers how to scale location pages without crossing that line.

Attorney bio pages

Each attorney page should cover bar admissions, years in practice, the types of cases they handle, verdicts and settlements only where your state's rules allow you to publish them, speaking and publications, and a real photo. Mark each bio up with Person structured data, linked to the firm's LegalService or Organization markup through worksFor, so search engines can connect the lawyer to the firm. Our schema markup guide shows how.

How important is Google Business Profile for PI firms?

For urgent local searches it is usually the single most important asset. The map pack sits above the organic results, and on a phone it can be most of what a searcher sees.

Practical steps:

  • Claim and verify a profile for each real office. Google's guidelines require a real location staffed during business hours, and they prohibit virtual offices that exist only for the listing.
  • Use your real firm name. Adding keywords such as "Car Accident Lawyer" to the business name breaks Google's guidelines and can get a profile suspended.
  • Pick the most accurate primary category (for example, Personal injury attorney) and add secondary categories that match the case types you take.
  • Add your hours, phone, website link to the matching office page and real photos of the office and team.
  • Answer reviews, good and bad, in a professional way that never reveals client details.

Reviews

Review count, rating and recency all influence how a firm shows up in local results, and they strongly affect who gets the call. Build asking for a review into the end of every resolved case, by text or email with a direct link. Never offer anything in exchange for a review, and check your state bar's rules before featuring testimonials on your own site, since several states have specific requirements for them.

Reviews on Avvo, Google, Yelp and legal directories also feed the sources AI assistants read when someone asks which firm to call.

PI is a link-heavy niche because so many firms compete. Links that tend to hold value for a law firm include:

  • Local news coverage, for example when an attorney comments on a crash pattern or a change in state law
  • Bar association and local chamber memberships
  • Legal directories such as Justia, FindLaw, Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell and Super Lawyers profiles, kept accurate and consistent
  • Sponsorships of local events, scholarships and community groups you actually support
  • Guest articles on legal topics in local business publications

Buying links from networks that sell "law firm guest posts" risks a manual action from Google. Our post on why brand mentions matter for AI search explains why mentions on trusted sites help in AI answers too.

Do bar advertising rules affect SEO?

Yes. Every state bar regulates lawyer advertising, and most base their rules on the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct, especially Rule 7.1, which says communications about a lawyer's services must not be false or misleading. In practice that affects SEO content in a few ways:

  • Words like "expert" or "specialist" may be restricted unless the lawyer holds a recognized certification. Check your state.
  • Past results may need disclaimers, and some states limit how you can describe them.
  • Testimonials and client reviews on your own site may need disclaimers.
  • Chat widgets, intake forms and follow-up texts must not cross into improper solicitation.

Have someone at the firm review new pages against your state's rules before they go live. A ranking page that triggers a bar complaint is a bad trade.

How do AI answers change personal injury SEO?

People now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews questions like "what should I do after a car accident in Texas". Those answers draw on clear explanatory pages and on directories, reviews and news coverage. For a PI firm, that means:

  • Open each case-type page with a short, accurate answer to the main question, then go into detail
  • Keep firm name, address, phone and practice areas identical across your site, Google, Avvo, Justia and the rest
  • Make sure AI search crawlers are not blocked in robots.txt (see AI crawlers and robots.txt)
  • Test the questions your clients ask in the main AI tools every month and note who gets named

Our guide to appearing in Google AI Overviews covers the details.

How long does PI SEO take, and what should it cost?

In a competitive metro, expect months before new case-type pages rank on page one, and longer for the most contested terms like "car accident lawyer [big city]". Smaller markets and long-tail terms ("dog bite lawyer [suburb]") move faster. Our post on how long SEO takes explains the factors.

Agencies that specialize in legal marketing usually charge a monthly retainer, and PI is often priced higher than other practice areas because of the competition. See how much SEO costs for the common pricing models and what to ask before you sign.

A 30-day starting checklist

  1. Audit every Google Business Profile for name, category, hours and duplicate listings.
  2. List every case type you take and check whether each has its own page.
  3. Rewrite the opening of your top five case-type pages to answer the main question directly.
  4. Set up a review request at case close.
  5. Clean up your Avvo, Justia, FindLaw and Martindale-Hubbell profiles so they match.
  6. Ask intake for the ten most common questions and turn them into FAQ answers.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO worth it for a personal injury law firm?

For most firms, yes, because a single signed case can be worth far more than months of SEO work. The catch is that PI is competitive, so results take time and the work has to be done thoroughly. Firms that also run ads often use SEO to lower their dependence on paid clicks over time.

Should we create a page for every city we serve?

Only where you can write something specific and useful about that city. Hundreds of near-identical city pages are treated as doorway pages under Google's spam policies. Office locations always deserve their own pages.

Can we use the word "expert" on our website?

It depends on your state bar's rules. Many states restrict "expert" or "specialist" unless the lawyer holds a recognized certification. Check your state's rules before publishing.

What matters most for showing up in the map pack?

A verified Google Business Profile at a real office, the right primary category, consistent name, address and phone across the web, and a steady flow of genuine reviews. Proximity to the searcher also matters, which you cannot control.

Do AI assistants recommend specific law firms?

They often do when asked, and they tend to draw on directories, review sites and news coverage. Accurate, consistent profiles on legal directories and genuine reviews make it more likely that your firm is among the names they surface.
