How to show up in Perplexity answers

Dravik teamUpdated 6 min read

To show up in Perplexity answers, allow PerplexityBot to crawl your site, make sure your pages rank in traditional search, and structure each page so its main answer is clear, specific and quotable. Perplexity cites its sources with numbered links on every answer, so being a cited source brings both visibility and clicks.

How Perplexity builds an answer

Perplexity is an answer engine built around live search. For most questions, it searches the web, reads a set of sources, writes an answer, and shows numbered citations linking back to those sources. This design makes it one of the more transparent AI tools for businesses, because you can see exactly which pages it used.

What Perplexity documents:

  • It operates a crawler called PerplexityBot, which it says is used to surface and link websites in its search results, and which respects robots.txt.
  • It operates a separate agent, Perplexity-User, for fetching pages when a user asks it to visit a specific URL.
  • Answers include source citations.

What is observed rather than documented:

  • Perplexity often cites pages that also rank well in traditional search engines.
  • It frequently cites sources such as Reddit, YouTube, Wikipedia, review platforms and established publications, depending on the topic.
  • It tends to favor recent pages for time-sensitive questions.
  • Clear, specific passages are more likely to be quoted than general marketing copy.

Perplexity has not published a detailed ranking method, so treat the second list as patterns, not rules.

Step 1: Make sure Perplexity can read your site

  1. Open your robots.txt file (yourdomain.com/robots.txt). Check that PerplexityBot is not disallowed, either by name or by a broad rule that blocks all bots.
  2. Check firewall and bot-protection settings. Content delivery networks and security plugins may block AI crawlers even if robots.txt allows them.
  3. Make sure key content is in the page HTML. If your text only appears after heavy JavaScript runs, some crawlers may not see it.
  4. Keep important pages fast and free of interstitials that cover the content.

Our guide to AI crawlers and robots.txt lists the main AI bots and the rules for each.

Step 2: Build on strong traditional SEO

Because Perplexity searches the web to find candidate sources, pages that rank well for a question are more likely to be retrieved. The basics carry straight over:

  • Pages indexed in Google and Bing
  • A clear topic and primary keyword for each page
  • Good internal linking to your most important pages
  • Technical health: no broken pages, no accidental noindex tags

If your SEO foundations are weak, fix them first. Crawling and indexing problems will hold you back in every AI engine that relies on search.

Step 3: Write pages Perplexity wants to quote

Perplexity pulls passages to support specific sentences in its answer. Make your passages easy to use:

Element Do Avoid
Opening A direct 40 to 60 word answer to the page's main question A long brand introduction
Headings Questions or clear topic labels buyers would recognize Clever headings that hide the topic
Facts Specific numbers, steps, definitions, with sources named Vague claims like "industry-leading"
Structure Short paragraphs, numbered steps, comparison tables Walls of text
Freshness A visible "updated" date when you substantively update Changing dates without changing content
Scope One clear topic per page Pages that try to answer everything

Example (hypothetical): a page titled "How long does invoice automation take to set up?" that opens with "Most invoice automation projects for mid-size companies take four to eight weeks, depending on how many approval rules and systems are involved" gives Perplexity a clean sentence to cite. A page that opens with three paragraphs about digital transformation does not.

Step 4: Get cited by the sources Perplexity already trusts

For many questions, especially "best" and "which provider" questions, Perplexity cites third-party pages more than brand websites. Find out which ones it uses in your category:

  1. Write down 15 to 20 questions your buyers ask.
  2. Run each in Perplexity and record every cited source.
  3. Note which domains appear repeatedly.
  4. Plan how to appear accurately on the most frequent ones.

Common opportunities:

  • Review platforms and directories in your category
  • Industry publications that accept expert contributions
  • Comparison and roundup articles, where you can offer accurate information to the authors
  • Reddit and community threads, where genuine, disclosed answers from your team can help
  • YouTube, if your buyers watch explainer videos in your space

Our post on brand mentions in AI search explains why this third-party layer matters so much.

Step 5: Publish content Perplexity cannot find elsewhere

Answer engines have plenty of generic content to choose from. Pages with something original stand out:

  • Your own data, such as anonymized benchmarks from your work (only if real and verifiable)
  • Detailed process explanations based on real projects
  • Clear pricing information, where you can share it
  • Honest comparisons that include when a competitor is the better fit
  • Templates, checklists and calculators

Step 6: Track your Perplexity visibility

Perplexity's visible citations make tracking easier than with most AI tools.

What to track How How often
Whether you are cited for key questions Run a fixed question list and record citations Monthly
Which competitors are cited Same check Monthly
Referral traffic from Perplexity Analytics, filtered by the perplexity.ai referrer Monthly
Leads who mention Perplexity "How did you hear about us" on your forms Ongoing

Answers change between runs and with different settings, so run each question more than once and track trends rather than single results.

Common reasons a business never appears

  • PerplexityBot is blocked by robots.txt or firewall rules
  • The site has few indexed pages on the topics buyers ask about
  • Content is generic and says the same as dozens of other pages
  • The brand is absent from the review sites and publications Perplexity cites for that category
  • Key information sits in PDFs, images or behind forms
  • Pages lack clear answers near the top

Perplexity compared with other AI engines

Perplexity ChatGPT search Google AI Overviews
Cites sources Yes, numbered on every answer Yes, when it searches Yes, as supporting links
Main crawler PerplexityBot OAI-SearchBot Googlebot
Search basis Its own index and web search Third-party search providers plus its own crawling, per OpenAI Google's index
Best lever Crawlable, answer-first pages plus third-party citations Same, plus Bing indexing Strong Google SEO and snippet eligibility

The work overlaps heavily. If you do it well for one, you usually improve your chances with the others. See how to appear in Google AI Overviews for the Google side.

Frequently asked questions

Does Perplexity use Google results?

Perplexity has not published a full description of its search sources. It operates its own crawler, PerplexityBot, and builds its own index. Pages that rank well in traditional search are often among its citations, so strong SEO helps either way.

How do I check if PerplexityBot can access my site?

Look at your robots.txt for rules that disallow PerplexityBot or all bots, and check your firewall or CDN settings for AI crawler blocking. Your server logs will show whether PerplexityBot has visited recently.

Can I pay to appear in Perplexity answers?

Organic citations cannot be bought. Perplexity has experimented with advertising formats, which are separate from organic answers. Earning citations depends on your content and presence across the web.

How quickly can new content appear in Perplexity?

Because Perplexity uses live search, new pages can be cited once they are crawled and indexed, sometimes within days. Competitive questions take longer, because your page has to be among the most useful sources available.

Is Perplexity worth optimizing for if few of our buyers use it?

The work that helps you in Perplexity, such as crawlable pages, direct answers and third-party presence, also helps in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. Optimizing for one usually helps the rest. Check your analytics for Perplexity referrals to judge its direct value.
